WEEKEND GUIDE TO SOUTH PADRE ISLAND
If I have seen one of the cleanest and the widest most beautiful beach in Texas in past 15 years of my travel in various cities of Texas, it is undoubtedly the South Padre Island. The drive from Houston to South Padre Island is approximately 8 hours, perfect for a long weekend gateway. We decided to go to the Padre Island just a day before the memorial day long weekend, so we got the rooms a bit expensive than its actual value. I would highly recommend comparing the room rates on various sites on the internet before you leave.
Schlitterbahn water park
Smooth sandy beaches
Water activities and sports
Sea Turtle Inc.
Sand Castle lessons
I found this website very helpful when looking for activities for my daughter. Southpadreislandadventures.com
La Copa Inn Beach Hotel
Schlitterbahn water park resort
Hilton Garden Inn
PLACES TO EAT
I wouldn’t call this island big on the food scene, but if you are looking for fresh seafood and enjoy drinks after spending the day at the beach, they have many options. Clayton’s Beach Bar, a local favorite, hosts live music events and the some of the best views of beach and bayside fireworks. Another few places worth mentioning are
Yummies Bistro (expect 1-2 hour wait for breakfast)
Grapevine café and coffee house (expect 1-hour wait for breakfast)
Senor Donkey for Dinner (came highly recommended)
Blackbeard’s restaurant (came highly recommended)
Pier 19 (seafood was fresh and tasty according to my husband and my daughter, but the vegetarian food was bland and tasteless.)
For a long weekend gateways, this is one of my family’s most favorite beaches in Texas; no wonder Travel Channel named South Padre Island as one of America’s best beaches for family beach travel.
